Who is a delegate?
A model UN delegate is a student who assumes the role of an ambassador to the United Nations at a Model UN event. A Model UN delegate does not have to have experience in international relations. Anyone can participate in Model UN, so long as they have the ambition to learn something new, and to work with people to try and make a difference in the world. Model UN students tend to go on to become great leaders in politics, law, business, education and even medicine.

Who is the chair?
The presiding official of a committee.

What is a Secretary General?
The Secretary General is the highest student position in the ECMUN program. Each year a Secretary General (SG) is selected from among the ECMUN staff members. The Secretary General oversees all aspects of the program and is responsible for coordinating the work of the MUN club and Secretariat

What is Secretariat?
Team of students responsible for all the aspects of the conference.

What is Security Council (SC)?
One of the principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security. Its powers, outlined in the United Nations Charter, include the establishment of peacekeeping operations, the establishment of international sanctions, and the authorization of military action. Its powers are exercised through United Nations Security Council resolutions.

What is Historical Security Council (HSC)?
Has the same role as Security Council, but will discuss about the global events in a specific year. ECMUN has taken 2001.

What is European Council (EC)?
It is an institution of the European Union. It comprises the heads of state or government of the EU member states, along with the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council. At ECMUN we follow MUN Parliamentary procedure for sessions.

What is United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)?
It is an international environmental treaty negotiated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to 14, 1992. The objective of the treaty is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system

What is United Nations Humans Rights Council (UNHRC)?
It is a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly. The council works closely with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and engages the United Nation’s special procedures.

What is United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)?
It provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. It is one of the members of the United Nations Development Group and its Executive Committee.

What is United Nations Development Program (UNDP)?
It is the United Nation’s global development network. It advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build a better life.

What is United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)?
It is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN). Its purpose is to contribute peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the UN Charter.

What is a president letter?
It is a letter from the chair of the committee that explains the chairing style and topics in the committee.

What is a position paper?
An essay detailing your country’s policies on the topics being discussed in your committee. Writing a position paper will help you organize your ideas so that you can share your country’s position with the rest of the committee.

What is an opening speech?
The first speech given by any delegate.

What is parliamentary procedure?
Set of rules by which MUN conference is conducted.

What should I wear?
You should be dressed formally; yes that means suits, skirts and dress pants.

Can I use laptop during sessions?
No. Only during unmoderated caucuses to write up working papers.

What should I bring to the conference?
Bring your research materials and paper, as you cannot use the laptop during the sessions. Only during the unmoderated caucus to write digital working papers.

What happens if the rules are violated?
You will be warned by Secretary General and in extreme cases you may be suspended from the conference.

Will there be refreshments available throughout the day?
Yes, the conference will provide snacks and drinks. There are vending machines in the building as well as both with food, coffee and drinks that you can buy.
